How can sorrow be sweet?
I think I’ve finally understood the concept.
Tomorrow will be the town’s giant street sale. Here in France it is called a ‘Vide Grenier,’ emptying of the attic, which means selling all those objects accumulated over the years in one’s attic – junk in most cases.
It is really quite amazing to think that one person’s junk is another person’s ‘find.’ The only problem for me is – I like my junk. I bought it in the first place because it was unusual, sometimes functional and often decorative. All right, I admit to having magpie tendencies.
There are, however, only so many surfaces, ledges and hooks in a house where decorations can be displayed. The day comes when newer treasures take the place of older ones, which end up in boxes in the attic.
So, tomorrow there will be much parting with sweet sorrow as I say good-bye to my cherished objects to the sweet tune of money and also the prospect of finding the odd antique to replace them.
